In the United States, barbers need to get a license to practice in their respective states. In most states, license renewal is required annually or biennially. For example, in Connecticut, barbers must take 10 continuing education credits. In Illinois, barbers must earn 15 credits to maintain their license.
Depending on the state, barbers must complete a state-approved apprenticeship program. Generally, the duration of this apprenticeship is two years, during which the student works under the supervision of an experienced licensed barber. The median annual salary for barbers is $33,220, and the top 10% earn at least $52,600. Job opportunities are expected to be plentiful in the future, with barbershops opening across the country and barbers being sought after by both small and large companies. In addition, the BLS projects an 11 percent increase in job opportunities for barbers by 2022.

There are many accredited schools that offer barber training in the USA. The largest is the National Accrediting Commission for Career Arts and Sciences, which is recognized by the Department of Education as a national agency for cosmetology arts and sciences. It accredits over 1,500 schools and colleges across the country. Its students receive a high level of training that is relevant to the demands of the industry.

In May 2013, the average salary for barbers in the United States was $44,480. The highest salaries were reported by Maryland and Washington. Barbers in Massachusetts earned an average of $55,390 a year, and barbers in Nebraska and Minnesota made a median salary of $50,790 a year. Barbers in Michigan, Georgia, and Nevada made the lowest average salaries.
In the US, barbers are expected to earn an average base salary of $92,050 by 2029. However, wages vary greatly by state. The lowest-paying state pays only $24,810 while the highest-paying states pay up to $57,500. This large difference in pay means that barbers should expect to make more money than they currently do.
